2023 Results
For the second time since its inception the USA won both the men’s and women’s trophies at the 2023 CAN-AM Cup. The overall CAN-AM win was cemented late Saturday afternoon, even before the start of Sunday’s mixed doubles matches. The CAN-AM was hosted entirely at The Maryland Club’s three courts the weekend of October 26-28, 2023. Canadian team members hailed from Vancour, Calgary, London, Toronto, Montreal and Nova Scotia. US players came from Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore.
The weekend started out with a casual get together on Thursday night at the Maryland Club where the players were able to get in a practice hit before Friday morning start of the matches. Friday mornings matches were tightly fought. At the time of the opening ceremonies at 5:00 p.m. the men’s matches were tied at 6 a piece while the US women held a 8.5 to 2 point advantage over their Canadian counterparts. Friday evenings matches did not go as well for the Canadian team with the US women winning 2 out of 3 matches and the US men winning 5 out of 6. At the end of the first day the US men were leading 11-7 and the US women were leading 11-3 with the overall score being held by the US at 22-10. Friday’s matches were highlighted by Canada’s Potter/Wheeler 5 game win over American’s Tatum/Rice as well as the Deratney/Hewitt 5 game win 15-14 in the 5th over America’s Chilton/Hoffberger. In addition, Canadians Griffin/Mee came back to beat Americans Rosen/Sharff 3-2 after being down two games to love and the US team of Hamza/Patterson had a big five game win over Canadians Baglio/Drew.
Friday’s women’s matches were highlighted by tough 5 game wins for America’s Wong/McConnell, Rux/Greene and Canada’s Multamaki/Brown’s 5 game win over America’s Schdmit/Greer, 15-14 in the 5th. Saturdays matches were highlighted by 5 games by Americas Hill/Parkhurst, Bolling/Bostick (15-14 in the 5th), and Chilton/Hoffberger, Anderson/Harrity and Ullman/Stanley. These 5 game matches won by the US were decisive in clinching the event.
Friday night The Maryland Club hosted a reception and cocktail party/dinner which was attended by the players and patrons alike. The bar was flowing with alcohol as matches were being completed. Hundreds of spectators watched matches and cheered on their country’s teams.
Saturday morning brought some bleary-eyed players as matches started at 8:30 a.m. with the Canadian men winning three of the first four matches and thus bringing the score much closer (US now leading 12.5-11.5). The next seven men’s matches were won by the US and by the end of the day they had clenched the Bernheimer-Bell men’s trophy with a 29-16 point lead. Similarly, the US women dominated Saturdays play and clinched the Gullian-Pierce trophy in the early afternoon winning 20-12 over their Canadian counterparts.
Saturday night brought together all of the players, patrons and sponsors for a phenomenal black tie dinner dance. The band hired by The Maryland Club to perform was exceptional. The players and patrons danced and drank through the night. The Maryland crabcakes were exceptional as always. Speeches were given and trophies were handed out to the American teams.
Sunday morning brought the mixed doubles matches. Given the fact that the American teams had already won all of the events, the mixed doubles matches were modified so as to allow some fun and more personal matches to occur. Shirin Kaufman Marver and her husband Jim as well as Jeff Stanley and his daughter Lindsay competed in the mixed doubles matches as teams. The Americans won 5 of the 8 mixed doubles matches on Sunday morning to end the weekend with the score of USA 54-Canada 31. The US men won the Bernheimer-Bell trophy 31-19 and the US women won the Gillan-Pierce trophy 23-12.
The next addition of this bi-annual event will be held in Canada in 2025 at a site to be determined.
